Greek Research and Technology Network (GRNET)



The Greek Research and Technology Network (GRNET S.A., is a corporation owned by the Greek Ministry of Development (General Secretariat of Research & Technology - GSRT). GRNET was established as a corporation in 1998, though as a network started operating in 1995. The deployment and operation of GRNET is co-funded by the European Union and the Greek State (Ministry of Development - GSRT, Ministry of Education and Ministry of National Economy). The mission of the Greek Research and Technology Network GRNET is the provision of high-quality international and national networking services to Greek academic & research institutions and to the public and private sector in support of their research and educational activities. In VOA3R, GRNET is responsible for the coordination of the content population tasks, and provide a liaison with the environmental modeling community. It will also set up a cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) so that its repositories are interconnected with VOA3R.


Key People

Hatzakis Ilias

Hatzakis Ilias is a consultant, currently working (since 2001) with the Greek Research & Technology Network, as a Project Manager of EU-funded projects, connected to the promotion of ICT to the academic community as well as to  citizens and businesses. He is coordinating a number of international cooperation projects, in the frameworks of FP7 research program, Competitiveness and Innovation ICT Policy Support Programme (CIP-PSP), eContent, eContentplus, Leonardo, INTERREG etc. in the areas of e-learning, e-business,  and the promotion of open access to scientific information.
In the past years (1999-2001) he has worked as an advisor to the General Secretary of Industry at the Greek Ministry of Development dealing with project planning for the promotion of IT to the Greek industrial sectors, and previous to that (1993-1999) to various companies as logistics manager (L’OREAL Paris, Petris S.A., Pirelli Cables S.A.).
Since 1999, he has been also working as an evaluator of IST projects for the European Commission, the Greek Information Society Special Secretariat and the General Secretariat of Industry.    
He received the Diploma of Engineer from the National Technical University of Athens (1990) and the Master’s Certification in logistics management from Université IX Paris Dauphine. (1991). His major areas of expertise are: e-learning, e-business, logistics management, EU-funded program/project management.
He has been a coordinator/ key note speaker/national representative in various Policy Making and academic conferences and dissemination events.
He is fluent in English, French, Spanish and Greek (native language).


Vassilis Protonotarios

Dr. Vassilis Protonotarios has a 5-year bachelor, a 2-year MSc and a 4-year PhD in Agricultural Biotechnology, all from the Department of Agricultural Biotechnology of the Agricultural University of Athens (Greece). He has a professional experience in the field of Organic Agriculture, both as an officer in the Directorate of Organic Agriculture of the Greek Ministry of Food and Rural Development as well from his participation in various EU projects concerning Organic Agriculture. He has been working as an external scientific associate for Agricultural University of Athens and Greek Research & Technology Network (GRNET). He is also the Greek National Editor of Organic Eprints. 

He is working on topics covering educational/training resources, blended learning, educational metadata, digital collections/repositories, integration of Web 2.0 tools in the agricultural training context etc.  He has been involved in content population-related tasks in various EU projects, such as the eContentPuls Organic.Edunet, the LdV Organic.Balkanet & CerOrganic, the ICT PSP Organic.Lingua and VOA3R).


Effie Tsiflidou

Effie Tsiflidou is a librarian – archivist and has graduated from the Department of Archive and Library Science, Faculty of the Ionian University, Greece. In 2006 she worked in the library of the European University Institute of Florence. During the periods of April – July 2007 she worked in the Documentation of the archives of General State Archives. From December 2009 to July 2010 she worked in the library of the University of Ioannina. Her interests are information management, educational metadata and archiving. She has been involved in the Natural Europe ICT-PSP project, supporting the coordination of content population tasks.

Association de Coordination Technique Agricole (ACTA)


The Association de Coordination Technique Agricole (ACTA, is the association of French Agricultural R&D Institutes dedicated to specific agricultural productions, and controlled by farmers' unions and ministries in charge of Agriculture and Research. ACTA is responsible for:

  • R&D programmes gathering specialists of different agricultural productions
  • Common promotion and communication (including over the web) of its members
  • Information dissemination in the domain of plant protection


Technological Educational Institute of Athens (TEIA)


The Department of Informatics belongs to the Faculty of Technological Applications of the Technological Educational Institute of Athens (TEIA, Its aim is to produce scientists in informatics, oriented to meet the needs of the market and of the society in qualified professionals with high-level knowledge, skills and experience in Information Technology as well as in Communications. The Department has at its possession 9 modern laboratories with a high speed networking structure, 27 professors, at various levels, and nearly 90 laboratory and scientific fellows. It is involved in European and national research and development programs and is currently acting as the coordinating organisation of the "ICT for Learning, Education and Training" committee of the Hellenic Standardisation Organisation (ELOT). As such, it participates in the European standardisation activities of the CEN Workshop on Learning Technologies and the CEN Technical Committee 353.
